How to Set Up Mobile Payments in China

Set up one route carefully, test it and retain an independent fallback.

Last checked 7 September 2026 · Practical orientation

Set up one payment route, test it with a small purchase and keep cash or a physical card as fallback. Do not assume that every foreign card, issuing bank, merchant or transaction will work in the same way.

Current official guidance describes registration for WeChat, Alipay or UnionPay apps using a foreign or Chinese mobile number, followed by linking an eligible bank card through current product prompts. Eligibility, verification and merchant acceptance can affect the result.

Official guidance also presents cash, bank cards and mobile payments as alternative routes. Keep more than one until your preferred setup has worked in ordinary use.

01

Step 1: prepare an account you control

Use a phone number and email account you expect to keep. Make sure you can receive verification messages and recover the account. Have the identity information requested by the current flow, an eligible bank card if you intend to link one, access to the issuer's verification method, and a fallback payment route.

If phone access is unstable, complete SIM and mobile setup first.

02

Step 2: choose one platform and follow current prompts

Download the app from the official app-store route for your device and confirm the publisher. Register with a number accepted by the current flow. Enter identity and card details exactly as requested and read the purpose of any verification step.

Do not follow an old screenshot guide button by button. Menus, supported cards and verification flows can change.

04

Step 4: make a small test payment

Use the account for a small ordinary purchase before relying on it for a time-sensitive payment. Check the status, amount, verification message and where refund or dispute information appears.

A successful test confirms one transaction. It does not guarantee every merchant or amount.

05

Step 5: keep a fallback

Carry a reasonable amount of cash or a physical card until the places you regularly use accept your setup. Keep it separate from the phone where practical. Never share a password, verification code or full identity image with a stranger to solve an ordinary payment issue.

06

Step 6: learn the recovery route

Find the current official routes for changing a phone or number, recovering a locked account, replacing a card, reporting an unauthorized transaction and contacting the platform or issuer. Record official help routes, not random contacts from comments or group chats.

07

Setup checklist

  • I control the phone number and email used for the account.
  • I downloaded the official app.
  • My identity and cardholder details use the requested format.
  • The card completed the current verification flow.
  • A small ordinary payment succeeded.
  • I know where transaction and refund status appear.
  • I have a cash or physical-card fallback.
  • I recorded official recovery and support routes.
  • I did not rely on an old fixed limit, fee or compatibility claim.

08

Common friction

The app accepts your number but not your card

Registration and card linkage are separate checks. Confirm current eligibility, identity matching and issuer verification.

The card links but a merchant payment fails

Card linkage and merchant acceptance are different checks. Read the error, check the provider and issuer status and use your fallback.

Verification is inconsistent

Keep the same identity format and use current product instructions and official support. Do not promise that every user's verification will be identical.

You see a fixed limit or fee in another guide

Treat it as unverified until the current platform and issuer confirm it. Limits, fees and policies may depend on the product, card and transaction.

Keep a fallback until your preferred setup has worked where you need it.

Should I open a Chinese bank account first?

This guide does not make personal-bank eligibility or nationwide onboarding claims. Start with payment routes currently available to you and wait for a separately verified banking guide.
