Move to China

China visa types: which route fits your purpose?

Decision guide

Relocation planning for a move to China

Start with what you will actually do in China, not with a visa letter. Your purpose, intended length of stay, the organisation or person supporting the trip, and the place where you will submit the application are the facts that narrow the route.

A visa is also only one part of the plan. A route that allows entry does not automatically answer what you may do after entry, whether you need a residence permit, or whether you are authorised to work. Treat the category table below as orientation, then verify your own case with the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application centre responsible for your submission location.

01

1. Define the trip before choosing a category

Write down four facts before opening a visa form:

  • Purpose: work, study, tourism, commercial activity, family visit or reunion, exchange, journalism, transit, crew duties, permanent residence, or another specific reason.
  • Intended stay: a short visit, a longer stay, or a move that is expected to lead to residence in China.
  • Supporting party: employer, school, Chinese family member, foreign family member in China, inviting organisation, host, or no sponsor at all.
  • Submission location: the country and city where you will apply, because the responsible mission or visa centre publishes the instructions for that jurisdiction.

This matters because two people travelling to the same city may need different routes. A person attending commercial meetings is not in the same position as someone taking employment. A family visit to a Chinese citizen is not the same route as joining a foreign national who is working or studying in China.

If any of those four facts is still uncertain, resolve it before paying for document preparation that may belong to another route.

2. Use the visa table as a route finder, not an eligibility decision

China's current visa system groups ordinary visa categories by the main purpose of the visit. The table below is a practical orientation based on the current Chinese Visa Application Service Center category list.

Main purposeCategory to verifyWhat the category is broadly forWhat to verify next
TourismLTourismYour jurisdiction's current application requirements
Commercial and trade activityMCommercial or trade visitsInvitation and activity requirements for your case
Exchanges, visits and study toursFNon-commercial exchanges and related activitiesWhether your planned activity fits the current F scope
EmploymentZTaking up work or certain work-related activitiesThe employer-led work-authorisation route and post-entry steps
Long-term studyX1Study intended to exceed 180 daysSchool documents and the post-entry residence route
Short-term studyX2Study intended to be 180 days or lessThe exact study period and school requirements
Long-term family reunion with a Chinese citizen or foreign permanent residentQ1Family reunion intended to exceed 180 daysRelationship evidence and the post-entry residence route
Short family visit to a Chinese citizen or foreign permanent residentQ2Family visit intended to be 180 days or lessRelationship and invitation requirements
Long-term visit to a foreigner working or studying in China, or certain private mattersS1Stay intended to exceed 180 daysRelationship, sponsor status and post-entry route
Short visit to a foreigner working or studying in China, or certain private mattersS2Stay intended to be 180 days or lessRelationship, purpose and current jurisdiction requirements
JournalismJ1 / J2Resident or short-term foreign journalistsThe specialist media-approval route
TransitGTransit through ChinaWhether a visa, visa-free transit rule or another route applies to your itinerary
International crewCCertain crew and cross-border transport dutiesCarrier/employer documentation and mission requirements
High-level talentRQualifying high-level or urgently needed talentWhether the responsible authority has recognised the case under this route
Permanent residenceDEntry for permanent residenceThe underlying permanent-residence approval and entry instructions

The category list does not tell you that you personally qualify. It also does not replace the document list published for the mission or visa centre handling your application.

Some categories use a 180-day distinction in their current descriptions. Do not turn that threshold into a general rule for every immigration question; it belongs to the specific category description.

3. Separate the entry visa from what happens after entry

The safest mental model is to ask three separate questions:

  1. What lets me seek entry for this purpose?
  2. What lets me stay or reside in China after entry?
  3. If I will work, what authorises the employment?

Those questions can involve different documents and different authorities.

For example, a work-related journey may begin with an overseas visa stage, while work authorisation and work-type residence matters involve employer action and Chinese authorities after or around entry. A longer study or family route may also have a post-entry residence step. The exact sequence depends on the route and current official instructions.

Do not infer permission to work from a business, family, tourist or study label. China's Exit and Entry Administration Law treats work authorisation as a separate requirement, and Shanghai's current work-permit guidance has its own employer-led process.

The practical consequence is simple: before booking around a visa label, identify the post-entry document or action that your real purpose requires.

04

4. Map the sponsor and document dependencies

A visa application is rarely just a passport plus a form. The supporting party often controls part of the evidence.

If you are moving for employment, the employer may own work-authorisation filings or documents that must exist before your visa application reaches the relevant stage. A school may issue admission or study documentation. A family route depends on the status and relationship of the person you are joining. A commercial or exchange visit may depend on an inviting organisation.

Use a short ownership table:

QuestionOwner to confirm
What is my real purpose in China?You
Which visa category should I verify?Responsible mission / visa centre
Who issues the invitation, admission or employment-side document?Employer, school, family member or inviting entity
What must I submit personally?Responsible mission / visa centre
What happens after entry?NIA / local exit-entry authority and any other responsible authority
If I will work, who owns the work-authorisation filing?Employer and work-permit authority

This prevents a common failure: preparing an applicant-controlled document pack before the sponsor-side route has been confirmed.

5. Re-check the route when a material fact changes

Do not assume an application plan survives a change in the underlying facts.

A fresh official check is sensible when:

  • the purpose changes from visiting or business activity to employment;
  • the employer, school, family sponsor or inviting organisation changes;
  • the intended duration changes materially;
  • the submission location changes to another consular jurisdiction;
  • the planned activity no longer matches the reason stated in the original application;
  • you are already in China and want to change the basis of your stay.

The right question is not β€œCan visas usually be converted?” It is: Which authority owns this change, and what does its current guidance say for this exact route?

Avoid relying on another applicant's experience. A route that was available in another city, year or fact pattern may not answer your case.

06

6. Finish with an official-source check

Before you act, create a five-line verification note:

Purpose: what you will actually do in China Submission location: the mission or visa centre serving your application Supporting party: employer, school, family member or inviter Likely category: the category you are verifying, not a self-declared entitlement Post-entry question: residence, work authorisation or another step that remains unresolved

Then check the current Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal and the instructions for your submission location. For in-China stay and residence matters, use the National Immigration Administration or the local exit-entry authority responsible for your place of stay or residence.

If Shanghai is your destination, Shanghai's official international-services portal provides current local visa and exit-entry routes, including the 12367 service hotline. Use Shanghai material as Shanghai implementation, not as a national shortcut.

If your unresolved question is really about what a document does, move next to the guide explaining visas, stay permits, residence permits and work permits. If it is about employment, use the dedicated work-permit route. If the official route is clear but several parties still need coordination, only then consider whether paid immigration support adds value.
